My daughter was explaining her latest assignment for her veterinary assistant course, and I was doing a wonderful job of following along.
At least, I thought I was.
Then she started using words I couldn’t pronounce.
Not complicated words, according to her. Just perfectly normal veterinary terms that apparently require three extra syllables and a completely different tongue.
I tried repeating one of them. She corrected me.
I tried again. She corrected me again.
By the third attempt, I was no longer speaking English. I’m not entirely sure I was speaking any recognized language.
It’s wild when your children suddenly know so much about something you don’t. One minute, you’re teaching them how to tie their shoes. The next, they’re patiently explaining animal anatomy while you nod along and hope there isn’t going to be a quiz.
I’m incredibly proud of her.
But from now on, I may need her assignments to come with a pronunciation guide.
All the best,
Tia
